In serious cartoon and representationals work there is the idea of holding a line - that is one which consistently mimics the way things look or a consistent look and feel of a character, image, etc.
However in the world of the abstract/symbolic/etc, we are searching for a lien with which we can embue the ideas and 'weight" (or lighness) that we wish it to have. This is so that it can carrry what is in our head to the canvas/paper/screen/vid/gm/etc.
